What are Individual Sessions for Athletes?
They are one-on-one sport psychology sessions that build calm, confidence, and clutch focus under pressure, while strengthening athlete mental health.
At MVP Mindset Sport & Performance Psychology, we believe in the power of sport. Through sport, we can better equip athletes by teaching knowledge and skills that help them thrive in and out of competition.
We also know that sports and mental health go hand in hand. That’s why we developed the MVP Mindset—a Mentally Versatile Performance Mindset. We help you build the same versatility mentally, with tools you can use in the moment and throughout the long grind of a season or career. Our sessions are virtual, built around your schedule, and always judgment-free, direct, and sport-savvy.

- Train the process with clear reps and habit stacks that travel to event day.

- Collaborate with parents and coaches so everyone follows the same playbook.
You leave with a plan to compete freely, enhance performance, and love your sport again.

Tools We Use in Individual Sessions or Athletes
Inside our online individual sessions for athletes, we blend education with pressure-ready exercises, so mental skills become daily habits.
Here’s how we train:
Educational, Strength-Based Coaching
We teach emotion and attention regulation skills that help athletes build mental toughness to perform and feel better, in sport and in life.
set your (mindset) goals, build your mental foundation (and knowledge base)
We combine Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with Mindfulness Sport Performance Enhancement (MSPE) and high performance mental-skills training, to sharpen focus, calm nerves, and steady confidence.
Pre, During, and Post Competition Drills
In individual sessions for athletes, you’ll learn simple exercises that you can run before events, in the moment, and after, so skills show up when it counts.
Build Your “Brain Equipment”
We help you build brain equipment you can use in sport and life. Think of sport psychology as strength and conditioning for your mind. Here, we train brain equipment that drives performance on and off the field, court, stage, or pool.
Mindset is performance, performance is mindset, and mindset is what we do.

Our Approach
How Our Individual Sessions for Athletes Work
1. Start With An Evaluation
We begin with a 60-minute intake to map your sport history, current challenges, and goals. A parent attends if you are under 18.
2. Set Clear, Sport-Specific Goals
We establish targets in the first or follow-up meeting, then outline the plan, reps, and checkpoints for the season.
3. Train & Review Weekly
You meet one-on-one going forward. If you are 15 or younger, periodic parent meetings are recommended to keep everyone aligned. Every session ends with a challenge to help you take your mental game into the real world, where it truly counts.

FAQs on Individual Sessions for Athletes
What is a sport psychologist, and how do they help?
A sport psychologist helps athletes train their mind the same way they train their body, which is the core of sport and performance psychology. We teach practical skills to handle pressure, stay focused, build confidence, and bounce back from mistakes or setbacks.
Sport psychologists help athletes see that success is more than physical ability; it is also about mindset. After sport psychology sessions, athletes often say they feel more confident, perform more consistently, and are able to “get out of their own head” during games or meets.
By combining evidence-based strategies with real sport experience, we help athletes perform at a higher level, enjoy their sport more, and support athlete mental health beyond competition.
What can I expect from my first meeting with a sport psychologist?
The goal of the initial meeting is to create a customized plan. The sport psychologist will ask questions to understand what brought you in and what you want from sports psychology for athletes. We discuss what is happening now, the history, and how it influences performance. Together, we set goals and explain next steps, including simple sport psychology activities for athletes you can start using right away. It is also a time to ask questions about the process and what to expect.
How frequent are meetings with a sport psychologist?
Meetings are usually weekly at first, unless it is clinically indicated to meet more often. Weekly sessions build the relationship and a strong base of knowledge and strategies. Once that base is set, we shift to biweekly or monthly so you can practice skills in your performance setting. This cadence supports motivation in sports and reinforces new habits.
Who can benefit from sport psychology?
Any athlete, from youth to professional, can benefit. The benefits of sports psychology for athletes are that it is not only for struggles, but it also helps those seeking an edge and more consistency. It supports athletes and mental health, by offering tools for stress, injuries, and competition demands. Parents and coaches also benefit from learning how to best support athlete mental health in sport.
What is the difference between a clinical sport psychologist and a mental skills coach?
A sport psychologist is a licensed mental health professional with advanced training in psychology and sport. This means they can help athletes with performance skills, like focus and routines, and with mental health in athletes, such as anxiety, stress, or burnout.
A mental skills coach teaches performance tools, like visualization or goal setting, but is not a licensed clinician and cannot diagnose or treat mental health issues. Both can be valuable, but many athletes choose a licensed sport psychologist for a comprehensive approach to performance and well-being that includes mental health in sport and the realities of mental illnesses and motivation in sports.
